ATHENS GARDEN CLUB AWARDS TWO
COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
The Athens Garden Club Scholarship Committee awarded two recipients with scholarships of $500 each. The annual scholarships are to assist graduating high school seniors in Limestone County, who will major in horticulture, agriculture, or other related fields as they pursue a degree of higher education. The applicants were very competitive with impressive academic and civic accomplishments.
Brady Peek is a 2011 graduate of West Limestone High School. Brady resides in Elkmont with his parents Jeff and Kay Peek. Throughout the four years that Brady attended WLHS, he was an honor student and he was in FFA, 4H, Beta Club, West Limestone Student Government, Limestone Cattlemen’s Association, Limestone County Farmers Federation, and FBLA. Brady is also very active in his church. He plans to attend Auburn University where he will pursue his Bachelors degree in the study of agronomy, as well as business and political science.
Nicolas Barbre is a 2011 graduate of Clements High School. He is the son of Jeff and Tina Barbre. He is an honor student, and was selected to be a member of the Limestone/Morgan County Youth Leadership and Career Development Program, which is sponsored by the county extension office. Nicolas was a member of the Beta Club, President of Greater Limestone County Junior Civitan, FFA, 4H, member of the Math Club, Boys State Representative and Who’s Who Among American High School Students. His volunteer work includes Trick or Treat for St. Jude’s, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, World Vision child sponsor, Operation Santa Claus, Special Needs Christmas Party, Special Olympics and Upwards Basketball. He plans to attend Auburn University in the fall and major in chemical engineering with emphasis in environmental resource management.
Athens Garden Club and their members endeavor to provide their annual scholarships that are supported by fundraisers. The primary fundraiser that supports the Athens Garden Club Scholarships are the annual Spring Plant and Bake Sale, and their cookbook A Taste of Tradition, which is $15.00 and is available for sale at Pablo’s Books on Market Street in downtown Athens.
