Athens State Center for Lifelong Learning Announces Upcoming Classes

 Athens, ALA - Athens State University’s Center for Lifelong Learning announces the following upcoming classes.   Classes are available to the public and will be held at the Center’s location at 121 S. Marion Street on the east side of the Limestone County Courthouse Square.

Pilates for Beginners Pilates is a total body conditioning exercise that uses movement and breathing. Master the seven beginner moves and become familiar with basic Pilates terms.  Don't forget to bring your exercise mat. Class is scheduled Fridays, May 20–June 10, 8:30 am to 9:30 am. The introductory fee is $15.

Senior Yoga Incorporating the yoga method of exercise for your whole body, this class offers a complete series of seated, standing, and balancing poses. There is no mat work in this class. Space is limited for individual attention so sign up early. Class is scheduled Fridays, May 20–June 10, 9:45 to 10:30 am. The introductory fee is $15.

Private Guitar Lessons Have you always wanted to play the guitar?  Now is your chance to learn. This class will teach you to read music and understand music theory while learning to play your guitar from finger picking to chords and much more. Handout music will be supplied by the teacher. Students will have extra instruction with the book that is required. Class is scheduled Fridays, May 20-Jun 10. Classes for kids are scheduled from 3 to 5 pm. Classes for adults are scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The fee for 30 minute lessons is $60.

Genealogy Basics Learn who you are in this course for beginners. Begin by learning the language, gathering what you need, and conducting personal interviews. Also learn how to search records, web sites, and libraries. Class is scheduled Saturday, May 21, from 9 am to 12 pm.  The fee is $19

Introduction to Digital Photography, This course will focus on using the digital camera for the beginner. Topics will introduce composition, framing, and lighting as well as lens, flash, mega pixels.  If you want to learn more about photography and how to choose a digital camera this course is for you. Class is scheduled Saturday, May 21, from 9 am to 3 pm.  The fee is $39.

Beginning MS Excel In this introduction to MS Excel 2007 you will learn how to create, format, edit, and print spreadsheets. Class is scheduled Tuesday, May 24, from 6 to 8:30 pm.  The fee is $49.

Beginning MS Word Brush up on your word processing skills in this course. You will learn how to create, edit, format, and print documents. Class is scheduled Thursday, May 26, from 6 to 8:30 pm. The fee is $49.

Painting with Acrylics: The Peacock This class is a fun and interesting way to learn how to paint with acrylics. Create a beautiful masterpiece step by step. Learn the tricks you will need to paint all types of pictures and how to find ideas for your paintings. Focus on the enjoyment of creating visual art. Class is scheduled Wednesday and Thursday, May 25-26, 9 am to 12 pm daily.  The fee is $39.  Get the supply list when you register

Science Among the Columns is a summer enrichment program designed to provide science investigative experiences for area students completing grades 3, 4, and 5. Athens State University pre-service teachers will work with campers as they learn about structures, invertebrates, oceans, light, and the environment. The program is scheduled June 13-17 and June 20-24 from 9 am to 2:30 pm each day. The activities will be the same for each week so enroll in the week that best suits your schedule. The fee is $65 per week which includes a camp t-shirt, scientist notebook, and lunch. Enrollment is limited and must be received by May 23rd so register early to ensure a space at camp. Art Explorers is a summer art enrichment program designed to provide an exploration of art mediums for children.  Each week the students will explore a different medium.  Fridays we will host student art exhibits for the public and parents. Classes meet Monday–Friday. Ages 8-11 meet from 9am to 12pm and ages 12-15 meet from 1-4pm.  The fee is $59 per week which includes all materials and a snack.  Enrollment is limited and must be received one week prior to the camp’s first day. Camp sessions include World Art June 6-10: A Splash of Paint, June 13-17; Pencil and Pen, June 20-24; Collage, June 27-July 1; Paper Crafts, July 11-15; Pottery, July 18-22; and Recreations, July 25-29.

Math and Reading Summer Challenge Are you worried about your child’s grades? Is your child falling behind in school? The Center for Lifelong Learning is offering tutoring for Math and Reading this summer. The teachers are College of Education students who are training to be teachers. Summer Reading Challenge is aimed at students who are completing grades K-5 who are reading below their grade level.  Please ask your child’s teacher to provide a recommendation for reinforcement. Summer Math Challenge is aimed at students who are completing grades 3-9 who can benefit with a refresher in math basics. Please ask your child’s teacher to provide a recommendation for reinforcement. There are three sessions scheduled – June 13-17, June 20-24, and June 27-July 1. Each session is Mon – Fri, 3 to 5 pm.  The fee for each session is $19. Register for one or all three. Enrollment is limited and must be received by June 3.

Digital Photography Workshop for Teens (ages 13 and up) This course is for beginners who want more than phone photos. You will learn about camera settings, how to make good photos, and sharing and archiving your photographs. The workshop is scheduled Tuesdays, May 31-July 5, from 9am to 11 am.  Fee is $65.

Conversational Spanish This course will introduce the Spanish language with songs, games, cultural experiences and more.  Classes are scheduled Thursdays, June 16 – July 21.  Ages 8-11 will come from 9-11 am and Ages 12-15 will come 1 to 3 pm.  Fee is $75 for each age group.

Group Guitar Lessons for ages 10 and up.  Spend one week trying out the guitar. This one-hour group lesson will provide an introduction to strings, tuning, and the chords for two songs. The group class is scheduled Monday – Thursday, July 25-28. Children 10 to 15 will meet from 4 to 5 pm.  Ages 16 and up will meet from 5 to 6 pm.  The fee is $85.  Space is limited so register early.  Individual lessons will begin in August.
